Arthur looked bitter, “Antonio…he was at the academy too. He was a couple of years above me so I never knew him, but I heard about him. One of the best in his year at the technical stuff but…” he sighed “He was a troublemaker. Him and two others were famous for sneaking out and pulling pranks on the teachers…I guess they thought it was cool or something” he decided not to mention how much he and the others had admired them for it, how they had tried to copy them and out do the older boys. He snorted at how stupid it had been “Anyway, for all that they did this, their grades were good and since no-one got badly hurt, the school just gave them detentions and left them be. Until they went too far…” he paused “I honestly don’t know if they meant to do it, or whether things just got out of hand but from what I heard, they set the vice principal’s office on fire.” He shook his head “And then things went bad. By rights, all three of them should have been expelled, but Antonio and one of the others were from decent families, so their parents paid the school to forget about it. But the last one was a scholarship kid, some shop boy, so he got the brunt of the punishment and was kicked out in disgrace.” He took a swig of the drink in his hand “I don’t quite know what happened next, but Antonio felt that this wasn’t right and got worse. Eventually, he disappeared one night, just ran away and no-one knew where he’d gone.”

 He leant back in his chair “I thought that was the last I’d hear of him, but then six, seven years later, we got a distress call from a merchant ship. I was a captain of a small local navy vessel at that time, basically just police. Anyway, we went to the ship to find that it was being attacked by some sky pirate who’d stowed aboard. He’d killed most of the crew and was about to get away in the lifeboat when I cornered him. We fought…and I recognised the fighting style” he looked up at Alice “I can’t imagine you know much of sword fighting, but there are certain things that you learn when you’re first taught that you never quite forget, and I could tell that this man was trained at the Academy, or at least that he’d learned from someone who did. So, naturally, I demanded to know who he was” he glared at the floor “The bastard just laughed at me, so I lost it. I’m not a patient man in a fight. Eventually I cornered him, and that’s when I got a good look at his face. I hesitated, not sure and that’s when he did this” the man’s fingers, traced the top of his artificial limb, the brass fingers moving slowly. He snorted “My own fault. I shouldn’t have been surprised that someone like him would turn pirate. I fell back of course, and that’s when he started laughing. I saw red and threw my knife at him. It was a desperate thing, but I wasn’t thinking straight. It cut his cheek and sliced through that pretentious ponytail he had been sporting. Then I knew I recognised him as Antonio so I cried out. Tried to attack him again. Well” he rolled his eyes and swallowed another gulp “You can imagine how that went with my right arm gone. He beat me easily and left me to bleed out as he escaped. I passed out and woke in the hospital a couple of days later. My men found me I guess. Swore I’d get revenge on the wanker. Took me a year to convince the navy I could still serve but I did it. Got myself onto the unit for hunting down pirates.” He looked out of the window “If what you say is correct, I should get my revenge soon” he smiled darkly, sending a shiver down Alice’s spine.
